Al Buraimi Governorate was officially established through Royal Decree No. 108/2006. It comprises three wilayats: Al Buraimi, Mahdha, and Al Sunainah, with Al Buraimi designated as the administrative center of the governorate.
Additionally, the governorate has historically considered as a crossroads for trade routes in the southeastern Arabian Peninsula. Its strategic location in the northwestern part of Oman has established it as a vital hub for commerce and development.
The economy of the governorate largely relies on trade, with agriculture, tourism, and services also playing significant roles. Geologically, the governorate is characterized by its diverse terrain, including mountain ranges, deserts, and plains.
The Western Hajar Mountains not only play a significant role in shaping the region's landscape but also boast valuable geological resources, including minerals and sedimentary rocks. Additionally, Al Buraimi experiences a hot desert climate, characterized by high summer temperatures and relatively mild winter conditions. Furthermore, rainfall is infrequent throughout the majority of the year, contributing to the region's arid environment.
