The activities of the 11th Annual Traditional Weapons Shooting Championship were launched today at the Al Buraimi Wilayat Shooting Range. The championship is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, represented by the Omani Committee for Traditional Weapons Shooting, in cooperation with Al Buraimi Governorate. The event runs from 8 to 13 December 2025 and has witnessed wide attendance from shooters, spectators, and enthusiasts of traditional sports.
The championship begins on the first day with the Open Women’s Competition, during which the final rounds are also held. On the following day, the qualifying rounds for the Skeet and Heavy (Thaqeel) plate competitions for both the Open and Juniors categories will take place. The third day is dedicated exclusively to the Heavy Rifle Competition, while competition continues on Thursday and Friday with Skeet events for the Open, Veterans, and Juniors categories. The championship concludes with the final rounds of the Skeet, Heavy, and Plate competitions, followed by the closing ceremony, which will be held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Ghassan bin Hilal Al Alawi, Chairman of the State Audit Institution.
In this context, Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Bartamani, Vice Chairman of the Omani Committee for Traditional Weapons Shooting, affirmed that hosting this championship in Al Buraimi Governorate for the first time on such a large scale represents a qualitative step that includes shooters from all categories—men and women of various age groups. He commended the significant efforts made by the Governorate in preparing and equipping the shooting range within a short period to be ready to host this important event, noting that these preparations contribute to delivering a comprehensive championship with a high level of organizational excellence. The championship features a variety of prizes across several competitions, including Skeet Rifle targets for the Open Men’s and Women’s categories, Heavy Rifle targets for the Open Men’s category, Skeet targets for Veterans, and Skeet targets for Juniors, in addition to Skeet and Heavy plate competitions. Winners of first place in the main categories will receive a car, along with cash prizes and trophies for other top positions, enhancing the spirit of competition among participants. Alongside the championship, a range of accompanying activities adds a distinctive heritage and community atmosphere, including camel shows, traditional folk arts (Al-Ayyala), paragliding activities, a classic car exhibition, a productive families exhibition, and a traditional weapons exhibition. These activities offer visitors an integrated experience that combines sport, heritage, and family-oriented events. The championship continues to strengthen the presence of traditional shooting sports in Al Buraimi Wilayat, as an integral part of Oman’s cultural heritage, while providing a competitive platform for shooters to showcase their skills within a well-organized and professional environment.
