The Mahdha International Sand Drag Racing Championship kicked off this evening in Al Buraimi Governorate, in the Kahil area of Wilayat Mahdha, under the patronage of His Excellency Sayyid Dr. Hamad bin Ahmed Al Busaidi, Governor of Al Buraimi. The event saw the participation of a number of competitors, including prominent champions in this sport, as part of the governorate’s commitment to organizing high-quality sporting events that attract various segments and contribute to activating sports and tourism activity.The first day of the championship witnessed strong competition across several categories, including the modified stock body category, the eight-cylinder category, and the six-cylinder (gas) category, amid a competitive atmosphere and notable public attendance, reflecting the level of organization and turnout for the championship.The championship also included a variety of accompanying activities such as a section for home-based businesses, a heritage village, a children’s theater, traditional arts, paragliding, and sand shows, in a scene that reflects the diversity of activities offered to visitors. The championship attracted audiences from within the Sultanate of Oman and beyond.Engineer Mousa bin Saeed Al Abri, Director General of Al Buraimi Municipality, explained that the championship receives the support and follow-up of His Excellency the Governor of Al Buraimi, and contributes to empowering youth, stimulating economic activity, enhancing local content, and attracting visitors, thereby supporting the governorate’s position as a sports and tourism destination.He added that the total prize value of the championship exceeds 45,000 Omani rials, in addition to five cars for the winners, and that the competitions will continue until February 15 as part of the Winter Buraimi 2026 events, within the framework of the growing sports and economic activity witnessed by the governorate.
